There are different grades of Carbon.  Activated Coconut Carbon is a great, economical way to remove bad taste and odor from both Well and Rain Water.  As these two sources are not normally chlorinated, there are no TTHMs and HAA’s in the water.  This Carbon will effectively remove the Organic Chemicals which may be present.
